Glendale Elementary PTA Minutes: September 19, 2011

Call to Order: 7:00pm, introduction of all in attendance

There will be a 90 day limit on getting in receipts to be paid out by PTA.
Principal’s Report:
Parent Survey, by paper or website, please fill out ASAP
Open house was a success, the earlier date was a better fit
9/20, Board of Education Meeting, Study session and voting, open to the public, 7pm
10/7, County wide early dismissal by 15 minutes
10/10, Columbus Day, no school
10/17 Next PTA meeting
Going to use Global email as well as Global connect (phone)
Parents urged to call school when kids bring home a problem or issue from the day, sometimes teachers don’t know about it, Mrs. Brace can get answers.
No toys, trading cards, electronics in school. Cell phones must be off and in backpacks. Things can get stolen and bringing these things to school is at your own risk.
Cameras are around the school, they are on most busses along with audio.
Programs:
K orientation, Amy Reinhart spoke. Success, PTA provided snack and note inviting new parents to 1st meeting. Thought for next year, have a table set up to take memberships at the orientation. Historians are going to gather information and journal it for next year on the wiki.
Open house has a great turn out. 60 more scoops of ice cream this year. Book fair success, try to ease traffic by setting up a que line and directing people to a check out person. Taking cash profit.
Books for birthday, picked by the kids instead of being given. Choice is better, use scholastic dollars for these books.
Fundraising:
T shirt orders due Sept 30th, good orders so far.
City Books due Sept 30th, people are asking for a different book, either go back to the Entertainment book or try another one. Those asked, were not impressed with what the City book had to offer this year.
School Supply kits, $500 profit, display sample kits so parents can see what is offered.
Scripts gift card order forms will be sent out before Thanksgiving break.

Membership:
152 members joined as of Friday's open house. That is pretty good, last year we had a total of 200 members at year end 2010, which was up from 167 members in 2009. Last year we got an award for getting dads to join.
Historian: nothing
Council Delegate: nothing
Room Parents Committee: Information is collected and given to the teachers to use as they need.
Teacher Rep: PTA membership from staff should be at 100%, Mrs. Rivard is working on this. Teachers will be emailed PTA notes and information.
New Business:
Using budget money to get “experiences” in the classrooms.
School store starting this Thursday, 9/22 7:40 – 8:15, kids can get school supplies, prices range from 15 cents to $1, going to sent out a global connect to remind parents of this service, also add the info to the wiki.
Looking for a representation for the Health and Wellness committee. Looking at snacks in the school and birthday. No goodies made at home.
Mrs. White asked for a discount on 60 of the 50yr anniversary t shirts, she wants the shirts for $10 instead of $12. Voted no. $12 is the price for all. Money is available to those students that cannot afford the shirt.

Configuration Task Force, drop in students over the years is forcing the district to look at the use and funding of the schools. Should all remain open?, raise taxes?, close a school?

Money still coming in from fundraisers, good profits, fundraisers going well.
Principal’s Report:
Board of Ed Meetings on Tuesday, twice a month
Bully task force, Wednesday’s Mrs. Brace meets with a small group of 5th graders. Slogan, Don’t be a bystander be an upstander. Info and terms used in school will be sent home soon and put on website so parents can talk to their kids using the same words used in school.

Set up 12-8, Mrs. Brace is going to talk to the gym teachers, we need helpers YES kids, girl scouts, etc to bring kids in to shop. Provide coco and popcorn.

Programs:
Winter wonderland gingerbread house making and penguin patch was a success. Are we resigning for the Penguin Patch next year? Need more smaller priced items. Heather is checking out other options.
Fundraising:
Theme tray & Minute to Win it Feb 3. Donations are looking good and coming in. Games are being set up and tested with kids. Sell popcorn and refreshments? Pepsi is donating 5 cases of pop, we can use for that night.
March 23- Fish Fry.
1-23 Chocolate fundraiser info will go out. Orders due 2-10 and delivery will be mid March.
Clothing bin is out next to dumpsters. All donations help the PTA. We will get a per pound dollar amount.
New Business: Barb White will be at the next meeting to discuss Flag Day and Glendales 50th birthday celebration.
Literacy night, March 30. Thoughts on the night: 3 stations, read aloud in the library, Gym stations: :”Glendale is wild about reading” and a video in the cafeatorium of the kids in action during school’ We are hoping for a lot of teacher involvement and to give the kids a book that night, budget is $1000
No birthday books next year, money is going toward the literacy night, where books will be given out.

Guest Speaker:
Scott Johnson, VP of Board, came to talk to us about the Elementary Reconfiguration Task Force and next years budget. Please see Sweet Home Schools website for the options for Sweet Home Elementary schools future. No decisions have been made yet, the board is still in discussions. The board of Education is meeting on 1-21, 2-7, 3-3 and 4-3
